Barcelona outcast wanted by Turkish giants

Memphis Depay of FC Barcelona looks on prior the LaLiga Santander match between FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF at Spotify Camp Nou on October 20, 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Turkish giants Galatasaray are reportedly interested in signing Memphis Depay from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Galatasaray. The Turkish giants want to sign the Dutch attacker from Barcelona in the January transfer window.

Memphis Depay joined Barcelona a little over a year ago with hopes and aspirations. But while the 28-year-old finished the 2021/22 season as the Catalan club’s joint-top scorer, he had already lost his place as a regular before the campaign ended. And things have gone from bad to worse for him this term.

Barcelona desperately attempted to cash in on the Dutch international in the summer transfer window. And Depay even came close to joining Juventus before a move failed to materialise. A few other clubs showed interest in him closer to the transfer deadline, but he remained at Spotify Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s failure to offload Depay has not altered Xavi Hernandez’s plans, with the player managing only 131 minutes of game time. An injury has played a part in that, but Barcelona will prefer to offload Depay as soon as possible. Galatasaray could offer that option to the Blaugrana in January.

Galatasaray made heavy investments in the summer transfer window, bringing in over a dozen players. The Turkish giants bolstered their offensive unit by signing Dries Mertens and former Barcelona attacker Yusuf Demir. But they remain keen on adding to Okan Buruk’s squad in January.

Depay has thus emerged as a viable target for Galatasaray. And the Barcelona outcast has the quality to become an instant hit at the NEF Stadyumu.

But it is unclear if the Dutch international will leave Barcelona in January or wait until the summer to become a free agent.

Several other clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United, have also shown interest in Depay.

So he will have several options on his table if he is ready to leave Barcelona in January. But the final decision will rest with Depay, who will be desperate to regain fitness and be ready for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
