Arsene Wenger is backing his former club Arsenal to be in the Premier League title race this season after a good summer transfer window.
The Gunners are currently sitting top of the Premier League table, having won five of their opening six league fixtures, with their only defeat coming to Manchester United last time out.
Mikel Arteta’s side did miss out on the top four and Champions League football last season, instead having to play in the Europa League this season, much to the disappointment of the club.
Boss Arteta and technical director Edu have worked tirelessly this summer to improve the squad this summer with the additions of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos while seeing a number of out of favour players depart.
The 72-year-old Frenchman, who was in charge of the north London side from 1996 to 2018, believes the side will massively benefit from a good summer transfer window.
‘I would say they are moving in the right direction,’ Wenger said at an event to promote former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein’s new book Calling the Shots.
‘I honestly think there is no weak position in the team. They are young, promising players and they have bought well this year.
‘There is no completely dominating team this season and Arsenal has a chance with the potential that is there.
‘We used to be in the top four and why not again? You cannot even rule out the fact that they can fight for the title and hopefully they can do it.’
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since the ‘invincible’ season under Wenger back in 2004.
Wenger left his managerial role at Arsenal back in 2018, with Unai Emery replacing him. Arteta later took over at the end of 2019.
Arsenal will need to continue performing if they are to be in the title race this season with Manchester City and Tottenham albeit behind in the league table, but still unbeaten.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have had slow starts to the new campaign, but will expect to be up there battling come the end of the season.
