AS Roma are reportedly interested in signing PSG defender Abdou Diallo, who Tottenham rejected the chance of bringing to north London earlier this summer.

According to Il Messaggero, Jose Mourinho is eyeing a late move to sign the 26-year-old centre-back in an attempt to bolster Roma’s defensive ranks for the new season, with PSG looking to offload Diallo as new manager Christophe Galtier does not see the versatile defender as part of the French club’s long-term plans.

Diallo has been linked all summer with a move away from Paris, with Tottenham even reportedly being offered the chance to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star on a permanent deal, however, Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici rejected the chance to bring the defender to north London.

And now, Roma are looking to sign Diallo for themselves, with reports suggesting that PSG value the defender at €30m (£25m), a fee which could make a deal unlikely for the Italian side given how much the Giallorossi have already spent this summer recruiting the likes of Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Indeed, Diallo has proven to be a solid performer for PSG over the past three seasons when given the chance for the French giants, and for Roma, whilst the price tag is steep, Mourinho has the pulling power to potentially sign the defender on loan or even for a cheaper fee.

With Galtier eager to offload as much deadwood as possible, the French manager could be willing to sell Diallo for a cheaper fee if both Roma and the player are intent on a move, and the defender could thrive in Italy should a transfer unfold, much to the dismay of Tottenham.

Diallo has hardly had a chance to shine since joining PSG in 2019, yet signing for Roma could give the defender the platform he needs to show the world just how good he really is, and for Tottenham, this could lead to a situation that leaves Conte red in the face with embarrassment given that Spurs rejected the chance to bring the centre-back to London.

After all, Tottenham had a golden chance to sign Diallo, and with Roma now in the race to bring the defender to Serie A, the defender could thrive in the Italian top-flight and send a message to Spurs that they were wrong to not sign the French centre-back when they had the chance.
