Cristiano Ronaldo will not travel with the Manchester United squad for the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

A United spokesperson told our sister title the MEN : "Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United party scheduled to depart for our pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia on Friday. He has been granted additional time off to deal with a family issue.”

United face Liverpool in Bangkok on July 12 before facing Melbourne Victory in Australia three days later and Crystal Palace in Melbourne on July 19. They will then face Aston Villa on July 23 before returning home via Oslo, where they will face Atletico Madrid on July 30. That means Ronaldo might not face Steven Gerrard ’s side in Perth.

While he will not board the flight to Bangkok, United insist Ronaldo will be part of the squad this season.

Having repeatedly said in recent weeks that he is not for sale, the club maintain that stance remains unchanged amid reports they are in fact willing to sell the Portugal international.

For their part Villa’s pre-season kicks off in earnest at Walsall tomorrow as Gerrard casts his watchful eye over his first-team group. A weakened Villa squad will take to the Banks's Stadium with some - the likes of Boubacar Kamara, Lucas Digne, Matty Cash and John McGinn - having arrived in Australia early ahead of the club's tour which begins next week.

Villa will play three matches in Australia. They travel to Brisbane to face Leeds United on Sunday, July 17.

They then take on A-League side Brisbane Roar in Townsville on Wednesday, July 20 before facing United at the Optus Stadium. A week later they play Rennes at Roazhon Park.
