Everton and Leeds United have ended their interest in midfielder Harry Winks, probably due to Tottenham’s asking price.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham may find it difficult to offload several players, including Harry Winks, as Everton and Leeds United cool off their interest in the midfielder.
Tottenham’s summer window has been successful, with Antonio Conte getting in his preferred players. So far, as many as six players have been signed by Spurs, with a few more incomings possible. However, any more new arrivals will largely depend upon outgoings.
Like every other top club, Tottenham have half a dozen players who are likely to depart. Japhet Tanganga has been the only player to have found reasonable interest coming in for him, although there are others who the club desperately seek to sell or loan before the window shuts.
Conte made it clear which of the current players do not feature in his plans for next season. The Italian manager did not take Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon, and Harry Winks on Tottenham’s pre-season tour of South Korea. There has been modest interest in the latter, but things have become complicated due to multiple factors.
Tottenham have been demanding £25 million from suitors for the 25-year-old midfielder. Everton pondered a move, and rumours suggested the midfielder’s involvement was discussed as part of the Richarlison deal.
However, Everton are in a difficult situation financially and are looking away from a possible deal. Winks had been keen on a switch to Goodison Park, but a potential move now seems unlikely.
Leeds United had also been keen but seem to have cooled their interest and may look elsewhere to solve their midfield problems. Jesse Marsch has addressed the departure of Kalvin Phillips by bringing in two new defensive midfielders but remains on the lookout for another option in the centre of the park.
Hence they are looking at other targets, including Sporting CP’s Matheus Nunes. Despite Leeds United gaining plenty of cash through sales of high-profile players such as Phillips and Raphinha, they are not open to paying over the odds for players unwanted by other clubs, leading to them ending their pursuit of Winks.
There’s still over a month left in the market, and there are chances Tottenham may reduce their asking price close to deadline day to clear out their unwanted stars. Whether Everton or Leeds decide to revive their interest in Winks at that point will be interesting to see.
