Barcelona midfielder favours Manchester United move over Chelsea switch

Frenkie de Jong will reportedly prefer to join Manchester United instead of Chelsea if he leaves Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Manu Sainz, Frenkie de Jong’s agent has been in London to meet Manchester United’s executives. The Dutch midfielder wants to join the Red Devils instead of Chelsea if he leaves Barcelona in the summer transfer window as he wishes to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Frenkie de Jong has been involved in one of the most captivating transfer sagas of the summer. While the 25-year-old is keen on remaining at Camp Nou, Barcelona would like to cash in on him amid their ongoing financial distress, even though they are striving to activate two economic levers to ease their problems.

The Dutch midfielder has made nearly 150 appearances thus far for Barcelona, chipping in with 12 goals and 17 assists. But amid Barcelona’s stance to offload him in the summer transfer window, de Jong faces an odd issue to decide his next club, with Chelsea and Manchester United keen on securing his services.

Chelsea recently submitted an enquiry to Barcelona over the possibility of signing de Jong, as new owner Todd Boehly met the Catalan club’s president Joan Laporta to discuss moves for several players. The Blues are in transition, and their ageing midfield unit presents Boehly with one of the issues he must address this summer.

Frenkie de Jong is thus a viable target for Chelsea, who will have to fend off stiff competition from Premier League rival Manchester United to land the Barcelona midfielder. The Red Devils hold a long-standing interest in the Dutch international and have chased him for a few months now.

Paul Pogba’s departure as a free agent has left a void in the creative department at Old Trafford, especially with backup options like Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard leaving as free agents. So while Christian Eriksen is closing in on joining Manchester United, signing de Jong will be a step in the right direction. And according to Manu Sainz, the Barcelona midfielder wants to join Manchester United.

The reliable Spanish journalist has said that de Jong’s agent has been in London to discuss a move with Manchester United. And while Chelsea will push to secure the Barcelona midfielder’s services, he wants to reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. It will be interesting to see if a summer transfer to Manchester United sees the light of day for de Jong.
