Crystal Palace closing in on free agent

Crystal Palace are on the cusp of sealing a deal for shot-stopper Sam Johnstone, according to the South London Press.

The 29-year-old is currently a free agent, having left West Bromwich Albion following the expiry of his contract.

Johnstone was on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur, but they shifted their focus to Southampton’s Fraser Foster.

However, the England international remained in the sights of several clubs, including the Eagles, who emerged as favourites to snap him up.

And Patrick Vieira’s side have made significant headway with their efforts to snap up Johnstone as they are closing in on securing a deal for him.

Crystal Palace see Johnstone as a potential long-term replacement between the sticks for club number one Vicente Guaita and are now close to making him their first new signing of the summer.

Johnstone played in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season, in which he was the first choice for the Baggies team that slid down to the Championship.

If Crystal Palace complete the signing of Johnstone, it could put Jack Butland’s future at Selhurst park under the scanner.
