The 45-year-old, who guided Ukraine to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, returns to Italy, where he spent much of his playing career.

The former AC Milan and Chelsea forward had been in charge of the Ukrainian national team for five years from 2016 to 2021.

Shevchenko hung up his boots in 2012 after almost three years at Dynamo Kyiv, finishing his career where it started.

His Ukraine side were decent at Euro 2020 – losing in the quarter-final to eventual runners-up, England.

He will now test his abilities as a manager at club level for the first time.

Genoa are currently 16th in Serie A, having won just one of their 12 games this season. Six draws have helped keep them away from the bottom three but not winning games is unsustainable and Shevchenko must now get more wins out of the team.

Shevchenko replaces Davide Ballardini, who was in his fourth spell with Genoa.

Last season, Genoa finished in 11th place and there will be hope that with so many draws, they might not be far away from turning those into wins and climbing up the table.

Shevchenko has the international break before his first game in charge – which will be against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Sunday, November 21. Mourinho and Shevchenko are of course familiar with each other from their time together at Chelsea.

He will host former club AC Milan on December 1, in what is now sure to be a game with plenty of interest around it.

It’s a tricky run-in really to start your managerial career at club level. They face Roma, AC Milan and Juventus in their first four games under Andriy Shevchenko.
