Jesse Lingard could be on his way out of Manchester United this month, with Sheffield United set to launch a potential move for the player according to The Athletic.
The Red Devils star has been out of favour at Old Trafford, with the 28-year-old yet to feature in a Premier League game for the club so far this season.
Instead, Lingard has had to rely on appearances in the cup for some first-team action and with the player seemingly not in boss Ole Gunner Solksjaer’s plans, he could be on his way out of the club.
Sheffield United are one team that have registered an interest in the player. They’re on the lookout for recruits to help them push on and escape relegation and boss Chris Wilder believes Lingard can help them do that with his Premier League experience and goal-scoring ability.
However, the player himself is believed to not be too keen on a move to the side due to their current relegation struggle.
It means that even though the Blades do want to bring the Englishman to the club, the player himself might turn down a potential move to the side, even if they would offer him more regular game time.
Some other teams have been linked with Lingard in the past, from Serie A sides to other Premier League rivals.
However, no concrete offer has yet been agreed and, if one doesn’t materialise, he may be forced to stay at Old Trafford and sit on the bench.
Lingard has spent his entire career at Manchester United, coming through the youth ranks with the Red Devils and only ever playing for a different side on loan.
He’s played for Leicester City, Derby County, Birmingham City and Brighton and Hove Albion on short-term deals in the past but most of his football – and his best performances – have come in a United shirt.
His best season came arguably in the 2017/18 season, when he managed 13 goal contributions and United finished second in the Premier League.
If he can repeat that kind of form with a new team, then whichever team signs him – potentially Sheffield United – then he could be a useful asset to have in any side whether in the Premier League or across Europe.
