Pirlo: Juventus will learn from mistakes

Head coach of Juventus Andrea Pirlo looks on during the Serie A match between FC Crotone and Juventus at Stadio Comunale Ezio Scida on October 17, 2020 in Crotone, Italy.

Club football resumed this weekend with Juventus traveling to Crotone, and drawing 1-1 in a disappointing result.

Speaking to the media after the game, coach Andrea Pirlo preached patience with his developing side.

“Unfortunately, we went down to 10 men in the last two games because of our errors, but we are a young team that needs to work and there hasn’t been much time for that with so many internationals.

“Young players need to gain experience by playing in matches and it can happen that they make naive errors as part of the learning process.

“We built a team with quality, but it is still a work in progress and needs time. The lads will learn through mistakes, unfortunately that also means taking a few risks in the early matches of the season.”

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Weston McKennie out after testing positive for COVID-19 and the trio of Alex Sandro, Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala still recovering from injuries Pirlo had to make some changes.

“We had very little time to practice, we had a first training session all together yesterday. We have players like Chiesa and Morata who attack the space, so the idea was to find passes between the lines, and that is how the goal was created.

“We made a few mistakes in the timing of the press, but as I said, these things happen when we’re still getting the machine oiled. We only really spent half-an-hour on this tactical movement in training yesterday, so it will improve.”

He also added that two newcomers to the side still needed time to adapt to the style of play he was teaching.

“There are some positions to seek, Dejan Kulusevski can search for the right position based on the situation and naturally he likes to cut inside on to his favoured left foot.

“Arthur comes from Spanish football, so he tends to pass it short and slows the tempo, whereas in Italy we’re more about vertical passes and quickly seeking the through ball. We’re working on it and he will adapt with time.”

Pirlo’s former side as a player AC Milan are sitting atop the Serie A table early, with a full twelve points from twelve after beating Inter Milan 2-1 in the San Siro derby.

“We knew there would be a lot of teams fighting for the Scudetto who invested heavily. It’ll be a battle, we will fight it out point by point. We’ve dropped a few already, but I am confident we’ll end up on top again.”
