Tottenham look set to sign left back Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid, despite interest from Manchester United.
It’s been an interesting couple of days in the transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur.
With all the rumors surrounding a potential return to Tottenham for superstar Gareth Bale, something else to watch closely is the future of Real Madrid left back Sergio Reguilon.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Spurs are “close to agreeing” a permanent transfer for Reguilon from Real Madrid. Ornstein added that Manchester United had interest in signing the Spain international.
Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that an agreement has been reached between Tottenham and Real Madrid for 30 million euros.
Reguilon has actually only played in 14 games for Real Madrid as he spent last season on loan at Sevilla. There, he played in 38 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting five. He helped Sevilla win the Europa League.
This would be a big signing for Spurs. Ben Davies is a solid player but Reguilon can be an upgrade on the left side of the back four for Jose Mourinho. Reguilon is a talented young player, only 23 years old, but with plenty of experience at the top level.
Not only would Reguilon strengthen Spurs’ squad, but signing him would also mean Man United don’t add more talent to their starting lineup.
Of course, things can change quickly in the transfer window and no deal should be considered complete until they are holding up the Spurs kit at the training ground.
But this has certainly been an interesting couple of days and it’s great to see Daniel Levy and Tottenham show some ambition in the transfer window.
If Spurs can get the Reguilon and Bale deals over the line, it’ll go a long way to strengthening the squad this season.
