Thiago Alcantara 'wants to join Liverpool' after Jurgen Klopp transfer talks

Thiago Alcántara of FC Bayern Muenchen celebrates after scoring his sides third goal during the Bundesliga match between Hertha BSC and FC Bayern Muenchen at Olympiastadion on January 19, 2020 in Berlin, Germany.

Thiago Alcantara 'wants to play for Liverpool', with the Bayern Munich midfielder reportedly having been in talks with Jurgen Klopp 'for weeks'.

Former Barcelona star Thiago wants a new challenge this summer, and Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said the club are willing to sell "for a fair transfer fee".

That so far appears to be the problem, with Liverpool reluctant to pay the €30m (£27m) asking price the Bundesliga giants have slapped on the 29-year-old.

The Spain international's desire to join the Premier League champions is certainly not at issue, according to the Pod Save the Ball podcast.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano told the podcast that following talks between Klopp and Thiago, both parties want to make the transfer happen.

"Jurgen Klopp wants the player and Thiago wants to play for Liverpool," Romano said.

"Thiago and Klopp have been in talks for weeks, he wants to join Liverpool."

However, Bayern are yet to receive a formal offer for Thiago, and Romano said the Reds are not keen on splashing out £27m.

"Liverpool don’t want to pay Bayern’s asking price and have not submitted a bid," he said.
Bayern CEO Rummenigge has confirmed he is willing to sanction Thiago's departure for the right fee.

"Regarding Thiago, it's known that he told us he wanted to do something new," the Bayern chief executive told German outlet Bild .

"If a club approaches us that is willing to pay a fair transfer fee, we will work on it."

Thiago has made 37 appearances this season, most recently featuring in Bayern's 4-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday to ensure their progression to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Bayern manager Hansi Flick commented on Thiago's future before the tie with the Blues, admitting he will be a big loss to the German champions.

“If he wants to try again in the Premier League now, I totally understand," Flick said. "But it would be a shame because Thiago gives our game that certain something.

“That's why I would like, as a coach, to have him on the team for the next few years, but that's life. It would go on.”
