'They were a little lucky, amid all the chaos, with schedules': Jurgen Klopp says his old rivals Bayern Munich's Champions League triumph was aided by German fixture list after Covid-19

Head coach Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool FC looks on prior to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match between Liverpool FC and Atletico Madrid at Anfield on March 11, 2020 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Jurgen Klopp has suggested Bayern Munich had luck on their side as they stormed to a treble-crowning Champions League glory at the weekend.

Bayern defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in Lisbon, with Kingsley Coman scoring the decisivie goal that also saw the German giants dethrone Klopp's Liverpool as Champions League holders.

Klopp, who went toe-to-toe with Bayern when he was Borussia Dortmund manager for seven years from 2008, congratulated his old foes on their success but said their schedule might have made things easier.

“It is difficult to write more history in eight months,” Klopp said to ZDF. “(Bayern were) a little lucky that, amid all the chaos with schedules, their schedule was best suited to the Champions League.

“At the moment definitely one of the absolute, absolute top teams. They are sensationally well equipped.

“They have absolute world-class players in every position, and all at the right age.”

Germany were the first European country to return to action in May after the outbreak of coronavirus halted the global game.

It means Bayern's games were more staggered than most other countries, resulting in a less condensed fixture list and more recovery time.

Their opponents PSG, for example, had Ligue 1 cancelled due to the pandemic so had less time to recapture match sharpness.

Klopp's Liverpool return to competitive action from the slender pre-season break on Saturday when they meet Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Premier League action resumes on September 12 and Liverpool's first game as defending champions is against newly promoted Leeds at Anfield.
