Matheus Pereira is a permanent Albion player after signing a four-year deal at The Hawthorns.
The Brazilian joined the Baggies on loan from Sporting Lisbon last August and went on to star for Slaven Bilic's side as they won promotion to the Premier League.
In 42 Championship appearances, Pereira scored eight goals and registered a staggering 20 assists.
Albion initially paid £725,000 to sign the 24-year-old on loan with that agreement giving them the right to purchase the player at any time or £8.25million.
They also had an obligation to buy him for that price if he featured in 30 league games or if they won promotion to the Premier League.
The 30 game clause was triggered after the derby against Birmingham - Albion's first match after football resumed following the coronavirus pandemic.
But with a gruelling schedule of nine games in 33 days, Albion and Lisbon agreed to let the player focus on his football before making a formal announcement.
Sporting and technical director Luke Dowling said: “While there has never been a question that Matheus was our player we decided to leave the final details until the season was complete.
“We wanted Matheus to focus on his football and the last nine games of the season.
"We agreed out of mutual respect, between club and player, to finalise his contract in the close season.
“Everybody is aware of the impact he made in his first season and from speaking to him I know he is now very excited by the challenge of playing for Albion in the Premier League.”
It means in total the Baggies have paid £9million to sign Pereira - with that fee being paid to Lisbon in instalments.
