Aston Villa tipped to complete £50m transfer as Wesley update emerges

Said Benrahma of Brentford celebrates victory with Ollie Watkins of Brentford during the Sky Bet Championship match between Brentford and Cardiff City at Griffin Park on December 11, 2019 in Brentford, England.

Darren Bent has backed Aston Villa to seal the stunning double signing of Brentford pair Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins.

The attacking duo were instrumental for Brentford in the Championship this season, with Benrahma contributing to 26 goals (17 goals, nine assists) and Watkins finishing as the division's joint top scorer with 26 strikes.

Villa boss Dean Smith is known to be a fan of both players having coached them during his stint as Brentford head coach and he's believed to be keen on a reunion.

It's being reported elsewhere that Villa could have to pay up to £50million for the duo, with the bulk of that fee for coveted Algeria international Benrahma.

Villa broke their transfer record to sign Brazilian striker Wesley for £22million last summer and it's likely that any move for Benrahma would eclipse that figure.

Prior to Wesley's arrival, Bent's move from Sunderland to Villa Park in 2011 for £18million was Villa's record deal. And the former B6 striker reckons both Benrahma and Watkins would be good additions.

He told Football Insider: "That’s two big fees for two very, very good players and for me, yeah, I can see that happening, Dean Smith knows these players very, very well.

“They’ve got a manager there who knows them well so for me, two great signings, but I don’t think Villa are going to be the only team in for those two, or at least one of those two.

“Benrahma, he’s a top player, his form since lockdown was superb. I know the last couple of games he wasn’t as effective but before that, he was the reason they were in contention.”
