Jordan Henderson said Liverpool will use the heartbreak from their Champions League exit as fuel for their first ever Premier League title.
He said after the painful defeat: “Tonight and tomorrow it will not feel nice, but we've got to use it and finish the season well.
“We've got the derby next, so that's what the focus needs to turn to very quickly.”
Only weeks ago, Liverpool were fighting for a historic treble but following defeats against Chelsea in the FA Cup and now Atletico, a league title is the only trophy remaining for what would still be a remarkable season for the club.
The league has eluded Liverpool for 30 years and victory this year would mark a major triumph for Jurgen Klopp, particularly if they maintain the current margin over the chasing pack.
But Henderson said his teammates will be hurting after failing to retain the Champions League.
He said: “Obviously we're really disappointed. The performance overall was very good.
“We put into the game everything and we're bitterly disappointed. We're going to be disappointed with the goals we conceded.
“We've experienced it over the last few years, you need to be fully focused at all times. Any mistakes can cost you.
“We're really disappointed with the result overall. We've got to take it on the chin.”
“The lads gave everything as they always do. That's the way they play, it's hard to play against. They defend very well. But we still created a lot of chances.”
