Arsenal and Spurs reportedly make Philippe Coutinho enquiries

Philippe Coutinho of FC Bayern Muenchen run with the ball during the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Muenchen and FC Augsburg at Allianz Arena on March 08, 2020 in Munich, Germany.

Arsenal are in the race with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham to sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, according to reports.

The Brazil international has spent the season on loan at Bayern Munich, scoring nine goals and registering eight assists for the German champions.

But Bayern are not willing to permanently sign Coutinho, which leaves the door open for the former Liverpool midfielder to return to the Premier League. According to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal have enquired about Coutinho’s availability.

But the report also claims that Mikel Arteta’s side face competition from Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs, who have all asked about the 27-year-old’s availability.

Speaking last month, Bayern chief Karl-Heinze Rummenigge admitted the club still had reservations over signing Coutinho on a permanent deal.

“Why is it [the transfer] not decisive? This is a difficult question,” Rummenigge told Sport Bild. “I think he played well in some games while in others he gave the impression of being a little inhibited.

“I don’t know why. The fact is that we all believe he is an exceptional footballer, we see him in training and sometimes during competitions. “Everyone tries to help him, the coach, his teammates. Now we have to hope that in the crucial weeks starting now, he will become an important factor in helping us win titles.”
